Daniel was from Judah. The king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, besieged Jerusalem. He called for "some Israelites from the royal family and the nobility, young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace." Daniel was one of these men. Daniel did not eat of the royal court’s food, he ate vegetables and water. He was much stronger than the others. He was much smarter and wiser than all the others. He prayed to God three times a day, on his knees. He could interpret the king’s dreams. The king liked him. The other administrators were jealous of Daniel and plotted with the king to have him thrown into the lion’s den for not praying to the king. Daniel only prayed to God in Heaven. He was thrown into the den of lions. The king felt badly and couldn’t sleep all night. The next morning he went to the lion’s den only to find Daniel had been spared. Daniel said, "O king, live forever! My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, O king."
